Everyone needs to see a chemist at some point during their stay in Spain, even if it is for minor mosquitoe bites or a summer cold. Spanish chemists differ to those in the UK, they are qualified similar to your local GP, this saves queues waiting to see the Doctor and can also save money.

Outside regular business hours, you must go to a 24 hour chemist. A pharmacist in Spain must own and run his own chemist, chain chemists are not permitted in Spain.

On the Spanish Security, you pay 40% of the cost of medicines when you are given a prescription; they are free to pensioners or the disabled. Prescription medications in Spain are among the cheapest in the EU. However, chemists add a huge mark-up on incidentals and over the counter non-prescription medications, such as painkillers, cough medicines and eye drops.

It is recommended that you buy cold and flu medicine, allergy tablets, paracetamol and aspirin abroad, Spanish pharmacists are highly trained and are a great resource as they provide free medical advice for minor ailments. They can supply a wide range of medicines over the counter without a prescription. Many chemists stock homeopathic and herbal remedies.

Bear in mind that brand names of medicines will change between countries; you will need to bring the generic name as well as the chemical composition and dosage.

Spanish chemists (farmacias) have the same range of products as any other country. They are generally not very strict about selling prescription drugs without a prescription so if you lose or forget your medication you can probably buy some more from the chemist. Most drugs have almost the same name in English as in Spanish, or you will find an equivalent. If the pharmacist does not understand you try writing it down. If you have a slight illness Spanish pharmacies are very good at giving advice and prescribing you something.
